Noctua has even better guarantee of working on your next chip as they send customers updated mounting hardware for free for future boards. If you want future proof and great cooling, go phanteks ph-tc14pe or noctua nh-d14. Noctua support was nice enough to confirm this for me, as well as a thread I posted here a few days ago. If you're waiting to upgrade to x99 like I am, any heatsink that fits socket 1150 will be compatible with future 2011-3 sockets. The 212 can't keep my chip out of the 90s at 4ghz or 4.2 load, but I'm sure the phanteks will.

I actually just bought a phanteks ph-tc14pe but haven't installed it yet. I'm running my i7 930 into the ground on an old 212+ OC'd from 2.8ghz to 3.8, and my max load temps are mid 70s. If you take the standard NH-D14 you'll get LGA1366 support out of the box but you'll need the LGA2011 kit afterwards and you won't get PWM fans either, thus I would rather take one of the other two coolers.Ģ12 is a great choice for a budget cooler that preforms as well as much more expensive closed loop water coolers (at least as well as an h80, quieter too). However, you would need a NM-i3 Kit to be able to use these coolers on your existing LGA1366 mainboard. So if you buy a NH-D14 SE2011 or NH-D15 now, it will work with your new X99 mainboard too without the need for a new mounting kit. The pins inside the socket will change but the overall mechanical specifications important for coolers will remain basically the same, thus most coolers compatible with LGA2011 now will be compatible with LGA2011-3 in autumn too. The situation with the upcoming Haswell-E platform will be similar to LGA115x in the last few years. Future 2011-3 sockets will almost certainly be compatible with 2011 brackets.
